Vid Notes:
I don't want to type up a novel on this, because it's just not that kind of vid. This vid was made largely because I love Matthew Good and was DYING to use one of his songs in a SPN vid, and also because I was absolutely in love with a lot of shots in "Salvation" and "Devil's Trap" and wanted an excuse to showcase them (so the vid is pretty heavy on scenes from those two episodes).
I was a bit pressed for time with this video because it absolutely HAD to be done before
Feeback would rock :-)
ETA: Awards! Thanks, guys!

Your syncing and music choice and the utter hotness of Dean makes this video fanfuckingtastic. Again you prove that you PWN ALL with your videos. And you make me abuse the capslock leik WOAH. :)
Miss ya hun! I hope you're feeling better. Take care, and don't forget to upload that vid program! *luffs*

I'm glad the whole out-of-control thing came across, as that was exactly the effect I was going for.

So I'm with him.
..Jesus Christ.Born To Kill has always been on my Supernatural playlist, albeit a different version of the song, and I think I did something of a dance of glee when I saw this, especially after the episode when I was in full-on 'yay, Supernatural' mode.
And. From the very beginning, with the use of those very untraditional shots (the hand turning the dial, the gun on the map, the waiting), I was totally in love. I love so much what you've done here, and how you've used the footage - Mary's death segued into Jess's, the slow-motion gunshot at 1:58 kicking off with that slide of the music and impacting on the beat, the parallels and overlays and flashes that actually really work, that horrible tension ratcheting up and up and this entire life of guns and searching and hunting and violence, those shots of the real respective beginnings for them, and that awful almost-crescendo like the end of Day in the Life, and just - stillness.
Oh, man. Oh, man. This is staggeringly awesome, and there is so, so much there in the footage chosen and the narrative that builds up - the section with Dean shooting the demon on Sam, I was surprised at how much it read, specifically, as Dean having shot a human (if I was unfamiliar with the source I absolutely would have read it that way), and then was startled at myself for being surprised, since really, that is the narrative. Underneath that was a human, and that was the choice Dean made. And John into the Demon reads nearly as John having been the Demon all along, and how gut-wrenching that is - and really, that reveal is the gut-punch of that. That the Demon is in him at all, and was there, since they found him. I kept getting pulled back and forced to reexamine the way I read things - and, I totally fail at coming up with another term for this, but - it worked for me something like an outsider perspective fic. Just, being really pulled to look at things differently, and - man.
This wasn't exactly an easy vid to watch for me (on first viewing I was a little thrown by it being a different version of the song than I was used to, but, you know, Matthew Good works that way, so I adapted), and also just the insane amount of tension and horror and energy that builds up, along with the long instrumental section, but everything really worked. I'm amazed by this, I love it, I'm always so excited when I get to see awesome new juxtapositions (really, the back-to-back of the Mary/Jess murders with the Jess dream spun backwards and tied in, yes), and the very awesome research/clippings/waiting section at the beginning, and just everything. Your amazing, amazing use of the song, especially.
This felt new and unsettling and refreshing and is very, very awesome, and I am just in awe, and. I mean, wow, thank you.

Re: So I'm with him.
*blushes*OMG, thank you SO MUCH! Wow, this is like the greatest feedback ever ;-)
You got exactly what I was hoping people would get out of this vid, and I'm so pleased that it worked for you as well as it did.
I have the other version of "Born to Kill" as well, and it took me WEEKS to decide which version to use for the vid. I ultimately figured the orchestral one was a little bit more dramatic.
I can't even put into words how much your comments mean to me, but thank you again!

As for the clips, I ripped the footage from the DVDs using DVD Shrink and then converted the resulting vob files into avi's using VirtualDubMod (both of which are free programs, btw).

The wee-est little thing that bothered me is the way you've got it credited--the song is by Matthew Good Band. There were three other guys, and they did contribute.
Thanks for sharing your skill with the fandom--this vid is going to get saved and re-watched many a time :)

I know I credited it as Matthew Good and not Matthew Good Band. I think in the actual vid itself I didn't have room for the word "Band" (and I figured it was OK since Matt was the one who actually wrote the song), but since you brought it to my attention I am going to edit my post so the word band is in there.
Thanks again!

It was recieved very well at Wincon, which was a huge relief, because I was feeling really insecure about this one for some reason.

I'm really glad you liked the instrumental parts. I've gone from dreading instrumental parts of songs to absolutely LOVING them because they give you such freedom to play around with the beats and just tell the story.
