Summary: This is both a Sammy vid and a Metallicar tribute vid. It explores how over the year of road-tripping with Dean, Sam began to see the Impala as his home.
Notes:
A day or two after the SPN finale aired I decided I wanted to make a Metallicar tribute vid. The car is such a big part of the show, and it was just heartbreaking to see it destroyed like that. I really wanted to make a vid that had some meaning to it, though, not just a bunch of eye-candy shots of the car looking cool. However, I had absolutely no clue what song could work for a vid like that. That, along with the fact that I have at least six other vids that I plan to finish over the hiatus, made me quickly decide to put the Metallicar tribute vid on the back burner.
But not even two days later, I picked up a Something Corporate album on a whim and wound up finding the perfect song! Aside from the fact that the music and lyrics really fit, the song has this bittersweet tone that turned out to be exactly what I was looking for.
When I first decided I wanted to do a Metallicar tribute vid, I assumed the vid would also focus largely on Dean, for obvious reasons. I mean the car is his baby! But once I heard the song, I realized that making the vid about Sam's journey would not only work better with the lyrics, but may also have a bit more emotional impact. Dean already loved the car, while Sam went from having no real attachment to the car in the beginning, to viewing the Impala as his home by the end. Sam started off the season being a passenger, essentially being dragged everywhere by Dean, while at the same time struggling to come to grips with the trauma of suddenly losing every part of the "normal" life he had built since he left for school.
It took awhile, but I think Sam has finally come to the realization that travelling the country hunting with Dean IS his life now. Sure, he still has a desire to hold on to some normalcy (which is one of the reasons I decided to touch on his relationship with Sarah), but for the time being he's made a conscious choice to take control of his life, stick with Dean, see things through, and learn to make the best of his situation.
As for the more technical aspects, this vid took absolutely forever to make. Way longer than it should have taken. I honestly couldn't say how much time I spent on it, but it was really ridiculous. This vid has consumed my life for an entire month. I went through so many drafts and revisions, I'm almost having trouble believing that it's actually FINISHED now!
The main reason why this vid took such an insanely long time to make is that I put a huge focus on internal motion, more than I ever have before. I'm a huge beat whore, so I always try to cut to the beats (or have some sort of action fall on the beats) anyway, but with this one I also tried to make as many clips as possible not only flow with the music but also move fluidly into the next clip.
Well this has gotten way more long-winded than I originally intended. See, this is why I don't usually type up vid notes. I tend to ramble incessantly and unnecessarily... *shuts up*
Anyway, I really really hope you guys like the vid!
Feedback would be very much appreciated!
