Wow, I never thought I'd actually finish this vid! I'd been planning it pretty much since the series started (because it's SUCH a perfect Dean song) and I've spent literally every spare moment this past week working on it (really, it took me like 50 freaking hours!).

Feedback would be loved and appreciated :-)

omg, i loved the vid! the scenes you chose for what particular part of the song were real great! i've not seen 'supernatural' yet ( it isn't being shown here. damn. :/ ) but that vid--aside from your usual (cute and interesting) ramblings about the show. *grins*--made me even eager to be able to watch it. and yea, jensen and jared looked so hottt in that vid! they're pretty tight bros on that series huh. anyway, so yea, great job on the vid!:D

Whee! I'm finally here. I wanted to do this last weekend, but I got distracted when my I-Man eps arrived, and then vidding, and yeah... I'm only now taking my head out of the vid long enough to breathe.

First off, I really liked the fade-outs throughout. I like that you followed the beat to them, and they weren't random. They were part of the vid, and I'm a big believer that empty space says as much as filled space, especially when it comes to music videos. Plus it creates a nifty feel throughout, like the video is actually moving TO the music. Does that make sense?

The fast cuts of Dean getting in the car around 00:11 kicked my ass. It was beautifully done.

And you know, I'm glad that you were the one to do the vid with a driving theme, and using THIS song, because the car is really a third character, like writers sometimes say a location is. And it needed a sensitive hand to give it depth, like this.

The fast cuts, with the fades, around 00:20, were very pretty. The fades and fast cuts are really giving this video energy. The internal motion from Dean behind the wheel and Sam sittinb eside him, to 00:22, where Dean is standing, and Sam is on the hood of the car, but they haven't really shifted on the screen was well spotted -- and keeping with the 'drive' theme.

00:30--*whimpers* The fast in and out fades on Dean's misery about killed me, because it feels like I'm being pulled toward it by the fades, as if the camera is moving, when it's not.

The internal motion around 00:40 was noticeably perfect. I think a non-vidder would catch that and understand what you've done there, if they even noticed the scene had changed, because the only clue is the change in lighting. You recently said you were afraid you were becoming a perfectionist, but if this is a results, I say keep with the pain of perfectionism, baby, because little details like this just make the vid experience for me.

"It's driven me before, and it seems to have a vague, haunting mass appeal" --- the connection between Dean's family in the photograph, and the journal, really says a lot in a short time: this is why Dean does what he does. This is the appeal. And you follow that last clip of Dean looking up with Dean dropping down directly where the previous Dean had been, which was a beautiful shot on its own, but especially lovely with the motion at work.

Dean kicking ass, and protecting Sammy from 1:10 to 1:25 was great, especially as it follows the statement you made about Dean's reasoning (of course I could be completely wrong), because it shows him taking action, doing what he has to do---and the Wendigo getting shot in the chest on beat was just cool.

1:31---Dean, I love you!! Er, sorry. That's such a cute scene. And one of the things I love best about this video, it takes the ups and downs, so it feels really complete. I feel like I'm getting all of the character from you, not some biased view.

Nice creepiness from 1:33-1:37, really went with the music, the whole creepy violin play.

The slow clip of Dean rising out of the water, really seriously feeling the hurt, this is where I died the most probably, because with the lyrics, you'd implied that this was his choice, the water over wine, and this is what he gets for it. Ouch.

(TBC)

The slasher in me loved the connection between Dean wanting normal (for the sake of it?), looking for it on the map, even, and Sam having it, just like that, as easy as that, and the uh, subtext of that, but I'll leave that for another video. ;)

2:06
Then they both have to turn away from normal, and drive away from it.
Also, liked how you connected those clips, girl w/Sam to different girl w/Sam to Dean watching, to Sam inside the car with him. I love vidders who do that, who are aware of clips relation to each other.

Shape Shifter Dean gets shot on beat! I love that. I couldn't manage it exactly in one of the vids I did (I can't think if it's one I've posted, not off the top of my head), so I bow to you here.

With open arms and open eyes: I liked that you had this while Dean was seeing himself, or well, Shape Shifter Himself, because it really drives home the point of self-awareness that the lyrics speak of.

2:20ish, I liked the call back to Dean in the doorway, finding Sam staring at the ceiling -- you used the first episode one in the first chorus, and returning there with 'home' pulled the video together for me even more. I think it connects thing. Plus I have a soft spot for chorus-editing matching up.

I think my favorite part of this video has to be from 2:26 to 2:35, where you have connection shots of Dean holding Sam, and then following that with Dean caring for him, taking care of him. The intercut clips from the past and now 'outside the fire' scenes smoothly turns things around to Sam, so that Dean can ask the question: what would you choose? It didn't feel abrupt in any sense, even though were were being turned, narratively-speaking.

The last sequence of images were beautiful in their own right, if only for the internal motion going on, but also, they showed me them getting their act together, having both made their choice, now taking their action, but not separately, at each other's SIDE.

And that last shot brought the car back into play, putting the bow on a very nicely edited video.

Awesome video. I think it's my favorite SPN one so far---actually, yeah, it definitely is. For the character insight AND the attention to detail. Man I love those boys.

Words cannot begin to express how happy your review has made me!

Seriously, I was in a state of perma-grin for hours after reading your feedback :-)

It's so nice to get feedback from a damn good vidder who completely understands everything I was trying to do in this vid.

Funny you mention the clips at 0:40 (the two almost identical shots of Dean in the car), I wish I could say I planned that one out but it was actually a complete and total fluke! I had the first clip and needed another one of Dean driving, so I picked a random episode and clipped the first scene I came across of Dean driving and put it on the timeline to see how it looked. I hit preview then noticed it was like the exact same shot but with different lighting and thought "cool!". I love it when things just work out like that :-)

I'm glad you liked the fade ins/outs, I was worried they might be too distracting at times. But then again, I have a tendency to overanalyze my own work to the point of ridiculousness.

I'm just so glad the vid made coherent sense to someone. I spend so much frigging time on this vid I was so worried that people wouldn't understand what I was trying to convey in some parts, but you totally got it.

Seriously, you've made my entire week with your comments. I really and truly appreciate you taking the time to leave a detailed response. You're an awesome vidder and I really value your opinion.

here via [info]wistful_fever's rec, and, holy hell, this was nice. my favorite bit has to be the cuts from present-day Dean to him, John, and baby Sam in the past, as if he's looking at them in that moment, and gah. such an awesome idea and wonderfully executed.

great work.

So I downloaded this a while ago but couldn't find where I'd gotten it from, but now I found it through [info]wistful_fever's recs today.
I've seen two vids from this fandom that I genuinly enjoyed, your's and this one by [info]ezgal. The others aren't neccessarly bad, but there's just not much storytelling, it's like recaps with music ( or all the action, or all the fun, or all the angst etc.) I almost assumed that there weren't enough footage to do a story of your own, but I was wrong. This is just that. So really what I'm saying is: I love it and I have no idea how you do it :)

It helps that I love this song, and it fits Dean and his obsessions with cars prefectly :) He would so use car metafors for his life

Aw, thank you! *blushes* I do always try to tell a coherent story with my vids, so I'm realy happy you thought the theme came across here.

And I knew the second I realized I needed to vid this show (after like episode 2) that I just HAD to use this song for Dean.

Hi, I'm kinda new to the Supernatural fandom. I found this post through [info]sn_newsletter. A lot of people have been recommending this vid, and it piqued my interest, but unfortunately both links are down. Any chance you'll be reuploading the video? :)

I'm sorry it's taken me this long to reply, but I just had the chance to watch your video.

And dude I can totally see why it won so many awards. I loved it.

I've always thought the song was about not conforming to social norms, or as dicouraging driving while under the influence, but damn it does apply to the Dean-Sam / Dean/Sam relationship, and Dean in general. When Dean tosses the keys to Sam, and the flashbacks to the night their mom died...guh. Freakin' fantastic. Thank you for this.

Oh, now, that was fun. I liked the total 'brother' vibe, i liked the moments of Dean *looking* at Sam and you can see him just thinking 'i'm taking care of you'...

Very cool.

My vid fb is so lame, but i really enjoyed this.

You know, I first saw this vid YEARS ago, and I've rewatched it periodically since then, and it has just struck me that I don't know whether I ever gave you any feedback. So I've sought out your LJ, adn this seems like an appropriate spot to say OMG YOU WIN THE INTERNETS.

This remains one of my very favourite vids in any fandom, because it illuminates the relationship between the brothers so well, because the editing is so damn good, because the choice of song is SO damn apposite - really, you just NAIL the characters and their dynamics, and you break my little heart every damn time I watch it. Gah. And, hell, I went right out and bought the CD (which is by no means the first time a vid has sent me off in search of a band's music), so props to you there too. This song is now inextricably linked in my mind with Supernatural, and with everything you evoke in your vid.

Oh, boys. Bless.

So, in short: brava. Bloody good job. You rock.

(Incidentally - Holy Mother of GOD, how exciting is the promo for the next ep? Ngah!)
